Biography

I have over 30 years of teaching experience that began in Nashville, Tennessee, after receiving my BA in history from Trevecca Nazarene University. I also have completed graduate work at Tennessee State University and Middle Tennessee State University. Before teaching I worked over 25 years in the tennis business, having taught and played professionally. I have been at Scavo for 17 years and retired in 2013. I came back to work in the Night Lab two years ago. I still enjoy playing tennis every day.

Biography

I graduated from Upper Iowa University with a BS in Secondary Education with Endorsements in Reading (grades 5-12) and all social studies (grades 5-12). Outside of school I enjoy spending time with my family, camping, and traveling.

Howard (Tres) Hewlett

Biography

I have a B.S. in Pre-Law Political Science from Indiana University of Pennsylvania as well as a B.S. in both elementary and secondary teaching, with a full social studies endorsement, from Pima College in Tucson Arizona. I taught 4th grade for two years and one year of 7th grade American History and 8th grade World Cultures in Nogales Arizona. I taught one year of 10th grade World History and 10-12 grade Psychology at Perry High School. I also taught 7th grade World Cultures at Weeks Middle School in Des Moines for 5 years before becoming the Government, Economics, Psychology, and Sociology teacher here at Scavo High School.

When I am not teaching I enjoy spending time with my wife and our two sons. I also play men's league hockey here in Des Moines

Class Description

US History – Semester 1 covers the founding of the country up through the Civil War and Reconstruction. In this class we focus on the basic ideals of the United States and the expansion of the country.

US History – Semester 2 covers the modern era, from American imperialism through the present day. In this class we focus on how the country’s principles change over time to meet the needs of a changing nation.

Community Based Learning – This course provides students with the opportunity to earn credits for English and US History in an interactive, dynamic setting. Through community partnerships with the State Historical Society and other area locations, students experience American history and its impact on Iowa and Des Moines. This course also includes opportunities for service learning while working with elementary school students.

Biography

Although I started my college education at UNI, I graduated with my BA in History and Political Science from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. I earned my MA in History from the University of Iowa, then returned to the U of I to earn my teaching licensure for Social Studies. During my teaching career I have taught at Fairfield, Grinnell, Dubuque, and Des Moines. I also served in the Iowa Army National Guard for 14 years as a member of the 34th Army Band. I’m a geek – I love comics, anime, superheroes, science fiction, and fantasy books & movies. In my spare time I enjoy going to conventions, cosplay, and music. I am passionate about education, social studies, and current events and I’m excited to be at Scavo!

Whitney Cavanah

Whitney teaches 20th Century World History, History's Mysteries, and America in the 1960s.

Biography

I graduated from the University of Iowa with a BA in History and from Drake University with an MA in Teaching. Outside of school I enjoy spending time with my family, gardening, and traveling.

Zach Mcclelland

Biography

I graduated from Grand View University with a degree in Secondary Education and an endorsement in All Social Sciences. In addition to teaching at Scavo High School, I also coach football at Roosevelt High School and Track & Field at Lincoln High School. Outside of school, I enjoy reading, spending time with my dogs, and rooting on the Michigan Wolverines. Go Blue!
