As a Business Educator it is my mission to help students find a passion that they can convert into a career. Everyone has skills that they can monetize, it is my job to help each student find that passion and develop a plan to achieve their goals. There is nothing more heartbreaking than wasted potential.
My classes will focus on developing technology skills (computers, websites, programs), business knowledge (economics, personal finance, marketing), and soft skills that businesses are looking for (communication, social maturity, employability skills) so each student can succeed in today’s world.
I spent my first 7 years teaching Special Education at Crestview Elementary in West Des Moines, where I enjoyed working with students in reading, writing, math and behavior. I grew up just south of Des Moines in Norwalk and my family has been in that area for over 150 years. I went to college at Iowa State and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Physics, with a minor in Mathematics and a specialization in Secondary Education. My first teaching job was in Storm Lake, where I taught Physics and Computer Programming and was the school district’s Computer Coordinator.
I left teaching for over a decade to pursue a career in the computer industry. Primarily I was a computer technician, working mostly on all the products made by Apple Computer, but I also installed, worked on and trained people how to use just about any software, hardware or networking product.
I returned to teaching around 2005 as a substitute teacher for Norwalk Schools. I really enjoyed substituting, but in 2010 I joined Des Moines schools as a 6th &7th Grade Behavior Disorder Teacher at Weeks Middle School. The next two years I was a 6th Grade Science Teacher, then I spent 2 years as a 7thGrade Science Teacher, all at Weeks. After that I tried working for myself in Landscape Construction, but I also signed up as a substitute for DMPS to help out financially. The Landscape Construction work didn’t pan out, so in 2018 I returned to full time teaching as a math teacher at Scavo High School.

Physics helps us to understand how the world around us works. The first semester involves the study of motion, describing it, looking at what causes it, identifying relationships, and making predictions. The second semester explores the concepts of electricity and magnetism and their relationship, and wave phenomena, properties, and applications.
First semester involves all the science that collectively seek to understand the Universe, life cycle of stars, the motion of objects in our solar system, and Earth’s formation and evolution from its beginning. The second semester will look into our dynamic Earth and forces that shape it, human interactions with the Earth’s geologic and environmental systems, and geochemical cycles and energy in the Earth system.

I have always been a lover of all things art, when in high school you could always find me in the art room, the photo lab, or doing ceramics or printmaking. I have always thought that art is all around us, in everything we do and all of our surroundings. I decided to harness this passion by continuing my own practice after high school by attending the Kansas City Art Institute with a focus on Fibers and Weaving. I had been a monitor at the Des Moines Art Center throughout high school, and after graduting from KCAI did continuing education for them for a few years. I then realized my passion for arts education and decided to move back home and further my knowledge at Drake University for Arts Education. I student taught in 2014 at Scavo and absolutely loved it. I then went on to teach elementary art at Oak Park here in DMPS, but as soon as I found out Scavo had an open art teacher position I couldn’t help but jump at the opportunity! Excited to be rising up every day since with our amazing staff and students!
